Low-Sew Mama & Baby Bunny
These bunny designs have been years in the making! I first crocheted the Mama & Baby Bunny in the autumn of 2022 using worsted weight yarn (Impeccable by Loops & Threads). They were originally crocheted in separate pieces and sewn together. I made Mama Bunny first. I remember it being quite a challenge to size the Baby Bunny down so the proportions were similar and just as cute.
I then made each bunny a dress with an opening in the back to make room for a pom-pom tail, which was such a fun detail. For some reason, I then lost interest and never bothered to write up the pattern, even though I was so pleased with them.
I made a girl's outfit...

...and a boy's outfit.

In the fall of 2024, I attempted a no-sew version. By this time, I'd foolishly decluttered the original bunnies, so I was working off of notes. I was also very new to no-sew and didn't know what I was doing. The result was not cute; it reminded me of a Voodoo doll!

That Christmas, I made another no-sew version using blanket yarn. I added an extra round when I crocheted each limb closed, so it was too long and the proportions were off. The bunny turned into a cat when I realized I didn't know how to no-sew rabbit ears. No-sew was just too limiting for this design, and at the time I didn't realize low-sew was an option. The head being crocheted as an extension of the body really affected its cuteness. I seem to have deleted every photo of this cat!
One year later in December 2025, I remade the bunny again. The limbs were still crocheted into the body, but this time the head and body were made separately and sewn together. This was a definite improvement. However, I was disappointed in the yarn, even though it was the same yarn I'd used for the original bunnies. I think Impeccable might be a lighter weight than it used to be. I also messed up the head shape.

A couple of weeks later, I took that same design and remade it using my old favourite, Bernat Handicrafter Cotton. I was finally satisfied with the result. There was very little sewing required, but it was just as cute as the originals. I simplified the face details, opting for an x-shaped nose instead of felt.

Finally, I took a risk on blanket yarn again. Baby Bunny was a success! The Mama Bunny ended up needing further adjustments. The head turned out disproportionately large, but that was an easy fix; I just took away one of the increase rounds. It's interesting that something that isn't even noticeable in worsted can be such a glaring issue in a heavier yarn weight.

The dresses also didn't seem to fit properly out of blanket yarn, so I'm thinking outfits and accessories will be a future release. I'm so excited to continue developing these patterns. It's hard to believe they've taken over three years to complete. I hope it's interesting to show how much trial and error is involved in pattern design. I like working fast, but there's also something satisfying about this project. It's more special to me because of how much effort went into getting it right.
The Baby Bunny is now for sale in my Etsy shop. The Mama Bunny is coming soon!
